It is said that a man’s talents will bring to the king’s table but to keep him at the king’s table he needs character. Meaning one can never enjoy the fruits of his labour if he/she lacks self discipline. Self discipline is the inner drive that compels you to maintain a difficult schedule.
Discipline is the
fuel that is needed to keep hard work rolling. Achieving a dream is not a day’s
job; there will come moments in your life when your hard work and sacrifices do
not seem to add up to anything tangible. On so many occasions we shall be
frustrated and discouraged. In these moments, our dreams may seem so blurred
such that we are unable to see them clearly. When we are almost convinced that
we are chasing a mirage, only a disciplined mind will keep us in fighting
spirits.
A story is told of
two frogs. One day they were crossing the road and as they were hopping around,
they fell in to a bowl of milk. They all began to kick in order to keep afloat.
A few minutes later one of the frogs got tired and gave up and saw need of
continuing to struggle since help was not coming. It drowned and died. The second frog did not
give up it continued to kick, and a few hours later, the milk turned in to
butter and it walked over it and jumped out of the bowl, tired and wasted but
alive. As it leaped away, it could not help but
imagine how easy it would have been to turn the milk in to butter had the other
frog not given up. Self discipline will keep us kicking even in the face of
rejection and disapproval. No one wants publish your book but you write anyway,
no one is willing to pick your call but you keep calling anyway, no one wants
to listen to your ideas but you keep telling them anyway. You are scoring low
grades in but you keep going to school anyway. They have turned down dozens of
applications for that job but you keep applying anyway.
A mind that lacks
self discipline will give up after few attempts, but a disciplined mind will
keep hopping that a breakthrough is around the corner. Self discipline is not
possible in the absence of positive attitude. Therefore, exercising positive
attitude is a good way of enhancing self discipline. Self discipline can be
learned by observing these simple steps.
a) Know
how to manage your tasks
b) Set
yourself some goals.
c) Learn
how to manage your time.
d) Have
a daily plan.
e) Delegate
responsibilities whenever possible.
f) Avoid unfinished business.
g) Do
not procrastinate.
